Apple River Canyon State Park

Apple River, Ill.

Rating:

(three campfires out of five)

Date: February 2002, February 2003

Description: We camped in the group camping area both times since it was the off-season and the main campground was closed. The group camping area sits atop bluffs overlooking the river in a fairly open area with scattered trees.

Recreation: This is a small park, but quite a scenic locale. There are a few short trails along the bluffs. We saw a bald eagle soaring over the river and also located eagles in the surrounding area.

Privacy: The sites in the group camping area are large but do not have any barriers between them. We had plenty of privacy since it was winter.

Alcohol: prohibited

Reservations: No. Plenty of sites available in February.

Rants: We took a look at the main camp area as best we could. Sites were small and bunched together, but there were many trees to offer some separation.
