Blue Mound State Park

Blue Mounds, Wis.

Rating:

(three campfires out of five)

Date: September 2006

Description: The park is situated among woodlands near the highest point in southern Wisconsin (more than 1,700 feet). This is the hilly unglaciated portion of the state. The campground is in a wooded area and is accessible to both RVs and tenters.

Recreation: There are a variety of short day hikes or cross country ski trips. There are observation towers on each side of the top of the mound. They afford a stunning view.

Privacy: There was a nice amount of foliage between sites. I recommend the first few tent sites (1 through 4).

Alcohol: legal (?)

Firewood: available at park entrance

Reservations: Yes, but probably not necessary on this particular late September weekend. The Wisconsin reservation system is user friendly.

Rants: The park is a little bit too close to Highway 18-151. There were a few too many vehicles whizzing by at all hours for this to achieve four campfires. It's difficult to re-create the wilderness experience with that much noise.
