Buckhorn State Park

Necedah, Wis.

Rating:

(four campfires out of five)

Date: September 2008

Description: Buckhorn State Park is a big park amid the splendors of Juneau County, Wis. The park skirts the wooded shoreline of Castle Rock Lake, a large lake that is part of the Wisconsin River Flowage. There are many great camping options.

Recreation: There is plenty of hiking here along with paddling and swimming. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, and its populations of whooping cranes, black bears and wolves, is nearby.

Privacy: Plenty of privacy on the small walk-in loop where we camped.

Alcohol: OK

Reservations: Yes. Wisconsin DNR offers a nice online reservation system.

Rants: The only thing I can complain about is the lack of firewood for late arrivals. Otherwise, a very pleasant experience.
