Chain-O-Lakes State Park Spring Grove, Ill. Rating:
(three campfires out of five) Date: August 2003 Description: We camped in the Class B camping area. Some sites were more isolated than others, and most were surrounded by dense vegetation. Recreation: This is a heavily used park. Fishing, hiking and paddling are options. Birding is excellent. We saw and heard sandhill cranes. We also rented a rowboat and fished the channel near the boat launch (no luck). A lot of motorboat traffic. Privacy: OK. We could not see any other sites from ours, but you will be in proximity to others. Alcohol: prohibited Reservations: No. We hung around on a Saturday afternoon until a site opened up. Rants: We actually started out at a narrow site squeezed between the road and another site with loud music. That was setting up to be a miserable experience so we asked and were able to switch to a much nicer site in another loop. Camp
