Fox Ridge State Park

Charleston, Ill.

Rating:

(three campfires out of five)

Date: July 2002

Description: Campsites were fairly spacious and grassy and were intended for tent use. It was generally quiet.

Recreation: We did not have time to explore the trail system, but it appears to be fairly extensive. There are canoeing opportunities here also, on the Embarras River. Birding likely would be fruitful with the mixture of bottomlands, uplands, prairies and deciduous forest.

Privacy: There was a nice amount of foliage between sites.

Alcohol: prohibited

Firewood: available from camp host

Reservations: Yes. Plenty of sites were available as I believe this was a weekday.

Rants: We battled a brazen group of raccoons all night. The masked rodents were surrounding us on all sides as we sat by the fire, and we were constantly chasing them off to little avail.
