Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

Beverly Shores, Ind.

Rating:

(two campfires out of five)

Date: Many times, most recently April 2008

Description: Dunewood Campground is just off U.S. 12 and the South Shore Line (Beverly Shores) and offers car camping and walk-in sites (¼ mile). The campground is situated among woodlands and dunes.

Recreation: The Lakeshore offers a variety of activities: hiking, swimming and cross country skiing are a few. There are a plethora of interesting short hikes and overlooks. The Lakeshore encompasses a vast array of habitats (woodlands, dunes, wetlands, prairie, etc.). The Heron Rookery Trail is incredible when the wildflowers bloom in spring. There are were more than 15 species of warbler along this trail in mid-May. The Cowles Bog Trail is a nice 5-mile loop that covers each habitat. Miller Woods Trail, in Gary, is an oasis. And the Dunewood Trace trail can be accessed from the campground. Birding is fruitful most everywhere.

Privacy: The car camping area allows for decent privacy with vegetation separating most sites. The walk-in sites are also surrounded by trees. They can be a little noisy on a crowded evening, but the foliage generally offers separation.

Alcohol: prohibited

Firewood: A private residence just west of the campground sometimes has some available.

Reservations: No. All first-come, first-serve.

Rants: During the past couple years, not only has alcohol been banned but those who dare bring any in the campground may be jailed or fined.
