State Park Chandlerville, Ill. Rating:
(three campfires out of five) Date: August 2003 Description: JEPC is a large, fairly new state park located amid rolling prairies near Springfield, Ill. There are about a half-dozen walk-in shelters. We pitched our tent outside of the shelter. There also is an RV campground. Recreation: There is an extensive trail system for hiking and mountain biking. We did not have an opportunity to explore this. Our stay was too short, but birding likely would be fruitful in the prairies and forest edges. Privacy: Good. No other campers were visible from our site. Shouting could be heard from the RV campground, about a quarter-mile away through the trees. Alcohol: prohibited Reservations: No. We were able to arrive in the evening on a Friday and find a campsite. Rants: The shelters seem
unnecessary. There was a barn swallow nest in ours, and a dead fledgling
on the floor of the shelter.
