Kankakee River State Park

Bourbonnais, Ill.

Rating:

(three campfires out of five)

Date: June 2007

Description: Kankakee River State Park skirts both sides of the Kankakee River. Topography includes limestone canyons, sandbars and rolling woodlands.

Recreation: A long bike trail traverses the length of the north side of the park. There also are numerous fishing opportunities. I would guess canoeing or kayaking would be fun. Swimming in the river is prohibited.

Privacy: A surprising amount of vegetation in the Potawatomi Campground. There was enough to offer some seclusion.

Alcohol: prohibited

Firewood: Available at concession stand and nearby gas stations.

Reservations: Yes, in peak season.

Rants: There were at least five signs that admonished campers "No Alcohol Allowed on Park Property." If you didn't get the message the fourth time, they had another sign to remind you. Strangely, this site seemed partied out in the day-use areas. They must have been sober parties, I guess.
