| Kettle Moraine State
Forest-South Eagle, Wis. Rating:
(four campfires out of five) Date: October 2003, September 2005 Description: Pine Woods Campground offers generally secluded car-camping sites amid a pine-birch forest. There are also a few short walk-ins and shelters on the Ice Age Trail. There also is an RV campground a few miles away. The park is situated along steep moraines and other glacial features of southeast Wisconsin. Click here for an evaluation of Kettle Moraine State Forest-North. Recreation: The park includes segments of the Ice Age Trail, which is a long-distance trail around Wisconsin that is not yet entirely contiguous. There are plenty of nice, short hikes. It appears to be an ideal cross country skiing destination. There is nice birding habitat including prairies and hardwood forests. Privacy: These sites are generally spread well apart. Though the campground was full, the other campers were quiet in the evening. Alcohol: permitted Reservations: We did not have them and were lucky to get a site. I would recommend them as you can reserve specific sites (unlike Illinois) including walk-ins, I believe. In 2005, we reserved a site ahead of time and had a lovely stay. Rants: Our first night (in 2003) we took what was available, and that was the handicap accessible site right next to a bathroom. There was a loud buzzing noise coming from the bathroom all night. Fortunately, we were able to switch sites for the next night and found a prime spot surrounded by woods. We were there on a peak fall color weekend, and there were quite a few day users.
