Kettle Moraine State Forest-North Campbellsport, Wis. Rating:
(four campfires out of five) Date: January 2006 Description: Though more than 60 miles apart, it's easy to see what the North and South Kettles have in common. Kettle Moraine North offers many of the same opportunities as Kettle Moraine South, but the topography is more dramatic. The moraines and kettles are steeper and the area is dotted with kames and bordered by drumlins. The woodlands include mixed hardwoods and a few groves of conifers and birch. We stayed in trail shelter No. 5, which is in a wooded glen. Recreation: A 31-mile section of the Ice Age Trail traverses the spine of the park. There also are plenty of short hikes accessible from the many parking areas. Mountain biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing are popular activities. Privacy: The shelters are well spaced. There was a steady trickle of hikers and cyclists on the trail and a solo backpacker who set up nearby. Alcohol: permitted Reservations: We didn't need reservations in January, but they are recommended. Other visitors said they have camped quietly off the trail without reserving a shelter. Specific sites (unlike Illinois) and shelters can be reserved. Rants: There isn't much to complain about on this one. It was worth the extra ride north. The chances of reserving a shelter (or shelters) on a prime weekend seem unlikely and a discreet bivouac off the trail might be a nice option.
