Recreation Area Oakwood, Ill. Rating:
(two campfires out of five) Date: November 2002, June 2003 Description: Kickapoo is situated amid the rolling country and forests of the Vermilion River Valley. There are two campgrounds that cater to RVs and tents as well as a few walk-in sites. Recreation: There is plenty to do here. The mountain biking trails were a lot of fun. Those trails traverse prairie and wooded ravines with some pretty steep ascents and descents. They are considered the best in central Illinois. We canoed above the park on the Middle Fork of the Vermilion. That was a lovely stretch of river, but I have heard other areas below are not as picturesque. Birding from the river was good. Privacy: In the smaller campground we stayed at in 2003, there was none. In the larger campground, there was plenty (we were also there in the off-season). There is no foliage between sites. Alcohol: prohibited Reservations: No. We made it in without them, but to avoid the crappy campground, I would recommend them. Rants: I have not experienced the
walk-ins, but the campground we stayed at in 2003 was among the worst I
have been at. The sites were tiny, and there was no privacy. There was one
small privy for about 50 people. You could hear traffic buzzing by on the
interstate all night. And fellow campers were noisy and belligerent.
