Lower Wisconsin River

near Gotham, Wis.

Rating:

(four campfires out of five)

Date: September 2003

Description: The Wisconsin River is a broad, slow-moving waterway that flows through the hills of southwest Wisconsin. This is an ideal canoe camping location, and we camped overnight on a large, wooded sandbar in the middle of the river.

Recreation: There are several liveries that rent canoes, provide car spotting services and help plan overnight trips. Swimming is great off of the broad sandbars. Fishing appeared to be popular as well. There are a few motorboats around, and many people tubing. Birding is excellent. We saw a bald eagle, an osprey (with fish) and several sandhill cranes.

Privacy: We had the sandbar to ourselves, and we could not see any other campers from where we were.

Alcohol: permitted with care

Firewood: There was plenty of wood available on the sandbar.

Reservations: No. The sandbars are public land, and it is first-come, first-serve.

Rants: We had a lovely trip on a hot September day. Camping on sand is always a little disappointing. It's not as comfortable to sleep on as one would think. The freedom to camp where you wish is great. Beware rising waters when the dam upstream opens. Tents can flood, and canoes can be lost!
