Maquoketa Caves State Park

Maquoketa, Iowa

Rating:

(three campfires out of five)

Date: July 2003

Description: The vast cave system, rock formations and steep, wooded ravines are an anomaly amid the rolling prairie of eastern Iowa. The campground is fairly small, but it is situated among pines in a bucolic setting.

Recreation: We were not at Maquoketa long enough to experience much of the cave or trail system, but we enjoyed the portions we did see. I also had a nice view of an elusive yellow-billed cuckoo from our campsite.

Privacy: We were fortunate to have one of the few campsites set back from the rest of the loop. We were surrounded on three sides by dense vegetation.

Alcohol: permitted?

Reservations: We were fortunate that our companions went ahead and arrived at the park early in the day and landed a nice site.

Rants: We were there on a steamy mid-summer day, and the caves were many degrees cooler. Anecdotally, the Iowans were very friendly.
