Mississippi Palisades State Park

Savanna, Ill.

Rating:

(three campfires out of five)

Date: November 2001, January 2004

Description: The tent campground is a vast open area with a few scattered trees. There also are a few walk-in sites (first-come, first-served) and an RV campground. Set amid rolling hills of Mississippi River valley.

Recreation: The palisades are beautiful, and the views of the Mississippi River magnificent. There are two modest trail systems, one of which is accessible from the campground. Birding is pretty good (I saw a red-headed woodpecker on a bitterly cold day).

Privacy: Subpar. I can only imagine what a crowded summer weekend would be like. The campsites are totally exposed.

Alcohol: prohibited

Reservations: No. It being the off-season, we had little problem finding sites.

Rants: Hunting is allowed in the park, and the trails were largely closed in November because it was a deer hunting weekend. It would be nice if the walk-ins could be reserved. I have a hunch there would be a lot of foot traffic near your walk-in site in the summer as these are along a well-trod trail. Trains almost constantly are running on the tracks about 500 feet from the campground. I enjoy hearing the iron horses chugging across the woodlands and prairies when I am camping, but I'm sure many people would prefer natural tranquility.
