Recreation Area LeRoy, Ill. Rating:
(three campfires out of five) Date: February 2005 Description: Situated in rolling country east of Bloomington, the park encircles Dawson Lake, a reservoir that was frozen when we were there. There are two primitive tenting locations: Catfish Bay and the Tall Tree "Backpacking" Trail, a 1½-mile walk-in loop. We camped at Catfish Bay. Sites are very short walk-ins from a parking lot. Recreation: There is not an extensive trail system. Fishing likely would be a popular activity. We heard barred owls calling in the evening. Birding nearby roads yielded short-eared owl, northern harrier and rough-legged hawk. Privacy: Questionable. We were the only people there in February. In the summer, it would have been quite crowded. There were plenty of tall trees, but few bushes and other smaller vegetation separating sites. Alcohol: prohibited Reservations: No. Plenty of sites available in February. Firewood: Available for purchase in park in season. Rants: Signs at campground stated that coolers would be searched for alcohol. There was a huge flock of Canada geese on the ice, and they honked and squawked all night. The area, though, did feel really isolated and we barely heard or saw a car the entire time we were there. The "backpacking" trail was closed to campers when we were there because of raccoon hunting.
