| Nelson Dewey State
Park Cassville, Wis. Rating:
(three campfires out of five) Date: July 2007 Description: The park is in the far southwestern corner of Wisconsin, one of the most remote portions of the southern tier of the Badger State. Forested bluffs skirt the banks of the Mississippi River. Recreation: Not much. A few short hikes and stunning views of the Mississippi River. I suppose one could fish or canoe in the Big Muddy. Privacy: Not bad, but disappointing. Sites are clumped together in a standard state park loop. Alcohol: legal (?) Firewood: available at campground Reservations: Yes, but perhaps not necessary. Rants: I had to give this three fires because of the generosity I showed to Mississippi Palisades State Park, Illinois' version of Nelson Dewey. A wooded campground trumps the barren field at the Palisades. Still, not much going on here, and the $10 Internet reservation fee plus $15 campsite plus $10 day pass made for a pricey stay.
